Choose the time around food and sleep.
The best light cannot repair a session scheduled during the hardest part of a child’s day. Choose the strongest overlap between comfort and light, and build in time for an ordinary late departure.

Begin with connection, not compliance.
Holding, walking, showing a favorite object, or exploring the location helps a child understand the new person and camera. Demanding eye contact immediately can make every later photograph harder.
Protect one clear family photograph early.
Once everyone is warm but before the toddler is finished, make the photograph where faces and relationships are clear. It does not need perfect smiles; it needs everyone present and recognizable.

Use snacks and breaks without hiding the reality.
Water, a clean snack, a comfort object, or a brief reset are tools, not failures. Avoid a sequence of bribes that makes every interaction conditional; let the session change pace when the child needs it.
