Engagement sessions without awkward posing — see the work

Helena + Laurent's wedding story

The wedding that made the work personal.

A San Francisco wedding built by friends, family, and the people who knew us best.

Why this belongs here

We wanted a wedding that felt like us—not a production of us.

The point was to bring our family and larger community together for a real party. The photographs matter because they preserve what everybody made, not because the day revolved around being photographed.

That experience still sits underneath our work. A wedding can be beautiful and visually considered without asking people to perform it. The emotional information usually lives in the glances, work, gestures, weather, and friends at the edge of the frame.

Friends and family gathering for Helena and Laurent’s San Francisco wedding

Made by the people around us

Everyone had a hand in the day.

Laurent’s father catered. Friends played music during the garden party, officiated, styled, hung flowers, spun Motown records, and made the taxidermied-mice cake topper. The next morning, friends returned with trucks and helped us clean up our own wedding.

The labor was part of the love. It is why we pay attention to setup, family, vendors, and the people doing quiet work behind a celebration instead of treating them as scenery around the couple.

The photographs

Being present gave the pictures their meaning.

Our friend Nirav Patel photographed the day with enough attention to hold its magic and personality without asking it to become a photo shoot. Seeing our own wedding documented this way helped clarify the promise we make now: no awkward posing, no scripts, and enough direction to let people return to each other.

The legal sequel · Las Vegas

We threw the wedding, then realized we had never made it official.

Months later we went to Las Vegas, got the license, and photographed the tiny drive-through ceremony ourselves. One chapter held the community; the other supplied the paperwork we had accidentally left out.
