The story
A surprise proposal unfolded inside the de Young Museum’s sculpture garden, followed by time walking through the architecture together. Digital photographs protected the reveal; black-and-white film gave the portraits afterward another physical register.

The reveal depended on sight lines.
A proposal in a public art space works when the approach, photographer position, light, and backup plan are settled before either person enters the frame.

The proposal needed precision. The engagement photographs needed room for the plan to disappear.

The session began after the yes.
Once the surprise was over, the architecture gave the newly engaged couple somewhere to move, talk, and settle back into themselves. Direction stayed light so the photographs could keep the energy of what had just happened.

Why this story matters
Film belonged to the second half.
Black-and-white film added a quieter, tactile chapter without interrupting the proposal itself. It reads as another material inside one complete San Francisco story.
